The Department of Chemistry, Pondicherry
University was established in 1987 and since then has been doing path-breaking research work in the contemporary chemistry. Major thrust areas of the Department include Organic Synthesis, Magnetic Resonance, Nanomaterials and Photocatalysis, Solid State Chemistry, Green Chemistry, Catalysis, Bioinorganic Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry, Theoretical & Computational Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry. The Department offers Post-graduate programs in Chemistry including M.Sc. (2 year), M.Sc. (5 year integrated) and Ph.D. Success of a large number of post graduate students in national tests, UGC-CSIR, NET and GATE bear testimony to quality teaching in the Department. Similarly, publications in scholarly national and international peer-reviewed journals showcase the Department’s achievements. The Department has been recognized for special funding by UGC (SAP-DSA) and DST (FIST).

Puducherry is one of the most popular tourist spots for national and international tourists. A unique experimental city Auroville, the brain child of the Mother, whose inhabitants are drawn from all parts of the world is situated on the outskirts of the city. There are several temples, churches, monuments, parks and mosques which attract tourists. Promenade Beach is the popular stretch of beachfront in the city of Puducherry, along the Bay of Bengal. It is a 1.2-km long stretch in Pondicherry, starts from War Memorial and end at Dupleix Park on the Goubert Avenue. The beach at Chunnambar also known as Plage Paradiso or 'Paradise Beach' is located near the mouth of the backwater.
